Il film d'animazione è basato sul fumetto "Cerebus the Aardvark", considerato da molti il creatore del fumetto alternativo indipendente. È iniziato nel 1977 ed è uscito per 300 numeri e detiene il Guinness World Record per "La maggior parte dei numeri consecutivi di un fumetto disegnato e scritto da una persona". Il creatore del fumetto, Dave Sim, ci ha detto che c'era una probabilità del 99% che non avrebbe approvato il nostro film, ma contro ogni previsione una volta terminato il film ha dato il suo approvazione al termine. Il nostro film è il primo film in CGI realizzato senza budget nella storia. In precedenza ha rifiutato George Lucas, DreamWorks e Paramount.
